Great Planning Words

From Northern's latest post:

So don't stick doggedly to the words on your creative brief when someone suggests something better, or work off brief isn't just great, it's a better strategy. Don't dig you heals in if someone who doesn't have 'planner' in their job title, or from another agency or, a client, has a suggestion that's better than yours.

The job of the planner isn't to DO all the best thinking, it's to make sure the best thinking emerges. A crucial difference that is lost on too many. So leave your ego at home and remember that changing your mind isn't a sign of weakness, it's a source of strength.

Hire!

I'd like to second Northern Planner's post on Andrea and her excellent dissertation on GHD.

She's a smart cookie and the first agency to snap her up will have done very well for themselves.

Job Update

So, seven weeks down and I am still really enjoying my new job.

Been doing lots of interesting work and getting involved in the nitty gritty of pitch work and the like.

The people are still great and there is a nice sense of teamwork across the agency.

It looks like being a great place to be a planner. Until HuntingdonScampDavies opens its doors at the very least!

Movin On Up

I cannot stand M People, but it makes a nice header...

Northern Planning Summit Number Something or Other went very well, a nice turn out despite acouple of last minute cancellations. (That's people not trains...)

We welcomed three newcomers, Andrea, Jenny and Rebecca; the most new people we have had at one event for quite a while.

The events now break up into groups as its difficult for seven people to talk in one group in a noisy venue; so we all discussed various topics.

One choice topic was about designers and whether universities are preparing them enough for work; providing enough briefs and helping them to understand the business side of design.

Overall a good night, I look forward to seeing everyone again for the next one!

For Those Who Are Aboout to Blog...

There is a strange sense of mini-mourning going on around the planning/ad blogosphere at the moment...

As fresh from Northern Planners Blog break, both Russell, Marcus and Sacrum have declared their intention to quit or limit their blogging.

It seems unusual to me that blogging can take up so much time and effort as to need quitting though, surely if you just write when you feel like it rather than letting people dictate when you write?

Certainly ive never tried to force blog entries on here (hence the gaps that sometimes appear), I just blog when I have something to say.

Maybe they are just casualties of popularity, which is sad.
