Why the iPad Might Just Work

My view on the iPad so far is about the same as my view on 50" LED 3D HDTV's, a lovely idea but not something that hits the sweet spot on my Need vs Cost internal diagram (I am a planner).
The new TV ad though is smart, and shows intelligent thinking from the agency and Apple. The iPad is the kind of device that will find it's own position in our needs. Rather like no one knew they wanted motion sensing remote controls until they played Wii Sports; Apple are telling us it does everything but deliberately stating it is up to us to determine what makes it special.

They could have sold it as the ultimate web browser, the new kindle, the ultimate travelling video player, handheld gaming heaven, etc etc. But with their core userbase of (let's face it) die hard obsessives that would buy a paper cup if Steve Jobs had sipped from it; they knew they could afford to give it some time to settle and find it's own niche before they start trying to guide people one way or another.

This thinking didn't work for PS3, which got lost in the void between games machine and video machine and browser and so on. Somehow though it seems perfect for this device that people want without knowing why, ellicting a kind of "We will make it work because it's so pretty we have to" response from developers and (so far) customers.

Instead of hiding from it, Apple are revelling in the fact that iPad is so new you don't know what to do with it yet... but you already know how to use it when that day comes.

Two Nice Pieces

Sony's new 3D ad, why bother trying to convey the benefits when you can make people want to see it for themselves...

And a much better than expected piece for Coke / World Cup with Corden and Rooney. I love how Coke are trying to take hold of the celebrations angle of the football, it fits perfectly with the brand and makes their sponsorship stand out from the 50 others. Besides, it references Roger Milla; meaning instant awesomeness.

2. But has biiiig hornets
3. Turkish people are friendly and helpful, and mostly speak very good English
4. Some English tourists are very ignorant
5. Wearing Factor 50 suncream provides roughly the same protection as wearing a leather jacket
6. Turkish people love their dogs and cats
7. The weather in May is perfect. Warm but not stiflingly so, and very little humidity most days
8. The Eurovision Song Contest is still fun with Polish commentary
9. The Polish commentator appears to have modelled his voice on Terry Wogan

My Week In Twits : 3rd - 9th May

Aka: Twitter roundup

The Election: --------------------------

samismail this election has been really revealing in terms of people who genuinely care for society vs those who just biyatch and moan

bengoldacre: lib dems get 6.6m votes and 53 seats, labour get 8.4m votes and 252 seats, our voting system is broken. #ge2010

daveknockles Good morning, friends. I see Britain can't make its fucking mind up. I can resolve this: whoever has the biggest logo forms a government.

FamousRob: @daveknockles Biggest Lego?

daveknockles: @FamousRob Cameron'll have the biggest lego. I bet he had a playroom full of the stuff when he was a kid - including the spaceships.

FamousRob: @daveknockles Of course. That Lego show pony wasn't cheap either

daveknockles: @FamousRob Nor that lego cocaine habit.

Roses Awards 2010: ---------------------------

FamousRob: great night at #rosesawards . Three golds and a silver, awesome. Oh and i think im still a bit drunk...

SteveKuncewicz: @FamousRob You won't be the only one. I got home ratted and stayed up watching the Election. Even a bacon sandwich can't save me.

An Election Day Message from The Ad Pit

If any of you vote Tory today I will be extremely disappointed in you.

Labour may not have been all we hoped for back in 1997, but that is no excuse to forget what happened to the working class during the last conservative government. If you are young and don't remember life under a conservative government, lets just say finally getting rid of them was our Obama. If you think you hate your prime minister now, just wait til 2 years into a Cameron majority government.

I don't know one single person anywhere who likes David Cameron, not one single person. Most people see him as a necessary evil to get rid of Brown, but why not change our stupid electoral system for the better and vote for a party that actually cares about everyone instead of a select few? The only major party that opposed the war on Iraq. The only party with a leader people actually like.

But if you don't vote Lib Dem, I won't mind. Just don't vote Tory, please.

Truth, lies, advertising, politics and newspapers

After two years in adland I still don't understand the divide between how we are seen and how other institutions are seen. The worst excesses of hard sell advertising pale into nothing compared to the amount of manipulative bullshit we are fed every day by so called respectable industries.

Particularly shocking is the current election coverage. Here are two examples to demonstrate:

1. Paper publishes online survey suggesting David Cameron won debate number 2. However it was revealed that the poll was opened when he started his opening speech, and closed when he finished it, before the debate even happened!

2. The Sun's own online survey (which requires registration) showed a 40% victory for Nick Clegg in last nights debate. Their headline is: Scrambled Clegg and Toast - but Cameron is full of beans. Ignoring their own polls when it contradicts what they want you to think.

How is it even legal for some papers to talk about the election? The Sun, Telegraph and The Times are Tory propaganda machines. The Mail is a slightly racist Tory propaganda machine. This is the kind of bias that would be slammed in an FMCG product ad, yet millions are allowed to be exposed to what is at best heavy bias, and at worst outright lies.

Lets look at The Daily Star who during the ash cloud fuss published a front page with a 747 jet with engines burning and "TERROR AS JET HITS ASH CLOUD". It turned out that this was a picture from a 20 year old film about what could happen.

From now on every page of The Sun should have a large disclaimer explaining how they are owned by Rupert Murdoch and nothing they say should be taken as fair. There is no parity, no fairness, no justification for government to say that advertising shouldn't be allowed to mislead people when it so blatantly happens every day in our newspapers.

The future of branding isn't advertising. It's buying newspapers and being allowed to print what the hell you like regardless of the truth or motives.

Always a Woman

If you would like an example of how to make great traditional advertising, look no further than the latest John Lewis ad from Adam and Eve.

You have a well defined and well realised target audience. A nicely thought out idea. Well written creative. A client who understands advertising. A good production budget and good direction.

Spot on.
